There might be a shuffle in Sunrisers Hyderabad as Dale Steyn won’t feature in the coaching lineup for the upcoming IPL season. As per a report from Cricbuzz, the renowned South African fast bowler has opted for a break from his IPL commitments this year.
The former South African speedster, renowned for his lethal pace, has conveyed his decision to the management. With a remarkable career spanning 93 Tests, 125 ODIs, and 47 T20Is, Steyn plans to return next season, subject to necessary arrangements.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are actively seeking a replacement for Steyn as their bowling coach for the upcoming IPL season. The responsibility of finding a suitable candidate now rests on coach Daniel Vettori. Despite inquiries, the former New Zealand captain remained tight-lipped on the matter. Likewise, Steyn remained unresponsive to messages. An official announcement regarding the new bowling coach is expected shortly as the franchise works to fill the vacant position.
The 40-year-old, renowned for his stints with Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad, transitioned to a coaching role with Hyderabad in 2022 after a brief tenure with Royal Challengers Bangalore. His coaching tenure saw the rise of Umran Malik, transforming from a novice to an international bowler. Malik’s commendable progress earned him a fast bowler contract from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His coaching impact reflects in the remarkable journey of Hyderabad’s emerging talent.
Pat Cummins likely to take SRH leadership mantle
The forthcoming season of the IPL is likely to witness Pat Cummins leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad team, as per expectations. The Australian skipper, who was acquired for Rs 20.5 crore in the previous Dubai auction, boasts a stellar international captaincy record.
Cummins’ appointment has been anticipated for a while, given his esteemed stature in global Cricket. His existing rapport with franchise head coach Vettori, stemming from their collaboration in the Australian national team, further bolsters his candidacy for the captaincy role.
Aiden Markram captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the previous two IPL seasons, albeit without remarkable success. However, his commendable leadership of Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the initial two SA20 seasons enhances his leadership credentials.
Cummins, despite a relatively subdued IPL performance, boasts a glittering international career, notably steering Australia to victories in the World Test Championship (WTC) and World Cup 2023, both against India. These triumphs may sway the management’s decision to entrust him with the leadership reins, given his substantial contributions on the global stage.
